Payment gateways in the Gulf compared

Fees, settlement times and requirements for Benefit Pay, Tabby, Tamara, Stripe, PayPal and Checkout.com compared. Recommendations by business type for Gulf merchants.

Choosing the right payment gateway is one of the most consequential decisions you make for an online store in the Gulf. The wrong choice costs you in fees, lost sales from declined transactions, or slow settlement that strains cash flow. This guide compares Benefit Pay, Tabby, Tamara, Stripe, PayPal and Checkout.com across the factors that matter most.

Benefit Pay

Benefit Pay is the dominant payment gateway in Bahrain. It is operated by Benefit, the company behind the national debit card network, and virtually every adult in Bahrain holds a Benefit card. Benefit Pay supports both debit and credit card payments, Apple Pay integration, and direct carrier billing for mobile payments. For Bahrain-focused e-commerce stores, Benefit Pay is the default choice — not offering it as a payment option risks losing a significant portion of local customers.

Application requires a valid Commercial Registration and a Bahraini bank account. Integration is available for WooCommerce, Shopify and custom stores through API or hosted checkout pages. Settlement typically happens within one to three business days, which is competitive with international gateways. Fees are generally lower than international alternatives for local transactions because Benefit processes through the local payment infrastructure rather than routing through international card networks.

Tabby and Tamara (BNPL)

Buy-now-pay-later services have transformed e-commerce in the Gulf. Tabby and Tamara let customers split their purchase into four interest-free instalments, paid over six weeks. The merchant receives the full payment upfront (minus the gateway fee), and the BNPL provider takes on the collection risk. This structure makes BNPL an acquisition tool as much as a payment method.

Tabby operates across Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It is particularly strong in fashion, electronics and home goods. Tamara is the leading BNPL provider in Saudi Arabia with growing presence in the UAE and Kuwait. Both integrate with WooCommerce and Shopify through dedicated plugins and have straightforward API documentation for custom stores.

The cost to the merchant is higher than a card gateway — typically 3 to 5 percent plus a fixed fee per transaction. The ROI case is that BNPL increases conversion rates and average order values. Data from BNPL providers suggests that stores offering instalment options see average order values 30 to 50 percent higher than card-only checkout, and conversion rates improve by 10 to 20 percent for higher-value items.

International gateways

Stripe is the most widely used payment gateway globally and supports Bahraini businesses with a valid CR and bank account. Its strength is developer experience — the API is well-documented, the dashboard is clean, and it supports a wide range of card types and currencies. Fees are 2.9 percent plus 0.12 BD per successful card charge for Gulf-issued cards, with slightly higher rates for international cards and currency conversion. Settlement takes two to seven days depending on the country and your processing history.

PayPal has limited support for Gulf merchants as a payment gateway for e-commerce. It works well for receiving payments from international customers but has higher fees (3.49 percent plus a fixed fee) and longer hold periods — new accounts can face 21-day holds on funds. PayPal is best used as an additional option rather than the primary gateway for a Gulf store.

Checkout.com has a strong presence in the Gulf with local acquiring relationships. It supports a broad range of payment methods including Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay and Google Pay, with local processing that reduces transaction costs for Gulf-issued cards. Fees are negotiable at higher volumes and generally competitive with or below Stripe for regional transactions. Settlement is one to four days.

Fees and settlement times

Total cost of payment processing is not just the per-transaction fee. Consider monthly minimums (some gateways charge a monthly fee if you do not meet a minimum volume), chargeback fees (typically 10 to 25 BD per incident), setup fees, and currency conversion margins if you sell in multiple currencies.

Settlement time matters for cash flow. If your store operates on thin margins and needs funds to restock inventory, a gateway that settles in seven days creates a different working capital requirement than one that settles in one day. BNPL gateways that pay upfront are attractive for this reason, even with higher per-transaction fees.

The typical recommendation for a Gulf store is Benefit Pay as the primary local gateway, Tabby or Tamara for BNPL, and one international gateway (Stripe or Checkout.com) for cross-border sales. This three-gateway combination covers over 95 percent of potential customers while keeping total payment costs competitive.

Choosing by business type

Small store, Bahrain-only customers: Benefit Pay + Tabby. The combination covers local card payments and BNPL with minimal integration complexity.

Growing store, Gulf-wide customers: Checkout.com + Tamara. Checkout.com's regional processing gives competitive rates across Gulf countries, and Tamara covers the Saudi and UAE BNPL market.

International store, cross-border customers: Stripe + Benefit Pay + Tabby. Stripe handles international cards and multi-currency pricing, Benefit Pay covers Bahrain, and Tabby adds BNPL for local customers.

High-value products (BD 100+): Benefit Pay + Tabby/Tamara. BNPL is particularly effective for higher-priced items where a customer is deciding between buying now or waiting. Offering instalments on a BD 150 purchase can double the conversion rate compared to card-only checkout.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

For local transactions, Benefit Pay generally offers the lowest fees for Bahrain-issued cards, with rates around 1.5% to 2.5% per transaction. For international cards, Checkout.com and Stripe are competitive. Tabby and Tamara charge merchants roughly 3% to 5% plus a fixed fee per transaction, which is higher but pays for itself if it captures customers who would otherwise abandon the purchase.

Yes, with Tabby and Tamara you integrate their checkout widget into your store. The customer selects BNPL at checkout, and the gateway pays you the full amount upfront minus fees. The customer then repays the BNPL provider in instalments. You do not need a separate card gateway to accept BNPL, but most stores offer both to maximise conversion.

Settlement times vary. Benefit Pay settles within 1 to 3 business days. Stripe settles in 2 to 7 days depending on the country and your account history. Checkout.com settles in 1 to 4 days. PayPal holds funds longer for new accounts — 21 days is not unusual. Tabby and Tamara pay you upfront at the time of purchase, minus their fee.

Stripe is available in Bahrain for businesses with a valid CR and a bank account. PayPal supports Bahrain for receiving payments but has limited support for processing Gulf-issued cards. Checkout.com has a strong presence in the Gulf with local acquiring relationships and competitive rates for Gulf-issued cards.
