How Much Does an E-Commerce Website Cost?

Full cost of an e-commerce website in Bahrain: build costs by platform, payment gateway fees, monthly operating costs and a break-even calculator.

An e-commerce website in Bahrain costs between BD 2,000 and BD 15,000 to build, depending on the platform and complexity. But the build is only part of the picture. Payment gateway fees, hosting, transaction costs and ongoing maintenance can add BD 200 to BD 1,500 a month. Here is a complete cost breakdown.

Build cost by platform

PlatformBuild cost (BD)Monthly costBest for
Shopify500 - 3,00040 - 120SMBs, quick launch, low complexity
WooCommerce (WordPress)1,500 - 5,00040 - 80Full control, larger catalogues
Custom-built8,000 - 20,000150 - 500Complex catalogues, unique workflows
OpenCart / PrestaShop1,000 - 4,00030 - 60Budget-conscious, mid complexity

These figures assume a store with 50 to 500 products, standard payment and shipping integration, and a professional design. Larger catalogues require more design and data entry effort. A store with 5,000 products costs more than a store with 50, not because the platform is different but because product data entry, image optimisation and category structuring take substantially longer.

Platform choice should be driven by your business model, not just the build cost. Shopify launches fastest but charges transaction fees if you use a gateway other than Shopify Payments. WooCommerce gives you full control over hosting and transaction costs but requires more technical management. Custom builds offer maximum flexibility but carry the highest upfront cost and longest timeline.

Payment gateway fees

Payment gateway fees are the most overlooked cost in e-commerce. In Bahrain, the typical structure includes a per-transaction fee of 1.5% to 3.5%, a monthly gateway fee of BD 10 to BD 40, chargeback fees of BD 10 to BD 25 per incident and sometimes a setup fee that is usually waived.

If your store does BD 10,000 a month in sales at a 2.5% gateway fee, you pay BD 250 every month. Spread across a year, that is BD 3,000 - more than the entire build cost of a basic Shopify store. As your revenue grows, gateway fees become your single largest e-commerce operating cost.

Local gateways available in Bahrain include Benefit (the national payment system), STC Pay, Tabby (buy now, pay later) and international options like Stripe and PayPal. Each has a different fee structure and integration complexity. Negotiating the transaction fee is worth doing if your monthly volume justifies it - most gateways reduce their rate at BD 20,000+ in monthly transactions.

Monthly operating costs

Cost itemMonthly (BD)
Web hosting (VPS or cloud)12 - 50
Domain renewal (amortised)1 - 3
SSL certificate0 - 10
Payment gateway monthly fee10 - 40
Plugin and licence renewals5 - 50
Content updates (1-2 hrs/month)40 - 150
SEO and marketing200 - 1,000
TotalBD 268 - 1,303

These are the fixed operating costs before you spend anything on stock, shipping or advertising. A store that does not invest in ongoing marketing will struggle to generate consistent traffic, regardless of how much was spent on the initial build. The operating budget should be part of your business plan from day one.

Break-even calculation

Before you build a store, work out how many sales you need to recover the investment. The formula is: Break-even sales = Total investment divided by (Average order profit multiplied by (1 minus gateway fee percentage)).

If your store costs BD 4,000 to build, average order value is BD 40, profit margin is 40% and the gateway fee is 2.5%, then profit per order is BD 16 minus BD 1 in gateway fees, giving BD 15 net per order. BD 4,000 divided by BD 15 gives 267 orders to break even.

At 10 orders a day, you break even in about 27 days. At 2 orders a day, it takes 134 days. If the break-even point is longer than 12 months, reconsider the investment or find ways to reduce the build cost before proceeding.

When marketplace beats own store

For many businesses in Bahrain, a marketplace listing on Amazon.sa, Noon or Talabat outperforms a standalone store. Marketplaces provide built-in traffic, payment processing and sometimes logistics. The trade-off is that you pay 10 to 20% commission on every sale and you do not own the customer relationship or their data.

Marketplace wins when you are selling standard products in a competitive category, have no existing customer base and want to test demand with minimal upfront investment. Own store wins when you have an existing brand and customer base, your products need explanation or customisation, or your margins are high enough to absorb BD 300+ a month in operating costs.

Many successful e-commerce businesses in Bahrain do both: a marketplace listing for discovery and reach, plus a standalone store for full-margin sales and brand control. The two channels feed each other - customers discover you on a marketplace and eventually buy direct from your store.

Frequently asked questions

A basic Shopify store with a free theme costs about BD 500 to build and BD 40 a month for the plan. You also need a payment gateway and a domain name, adding BD 20 to BD 50 in initial setup costs.

Most gateways charge 1.5% to 3.5% per transaction plus a monthly fee of BD 10 to BD 40. Setup fees are often waived. Benefit, STC Pay and Tabby are the most common local options.

Start with a marketplace if you have no existing customers and want to test demand. Start with your own website if you have a brand, a customer base or products needing more explanation.
