What zero-click search is
Zero-click search happens when a user's query is answered directly on the search results page without needing to click through to a website. Google displays these answers in featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs and AI Overviews. Recent studies show that 58.5% of all searches on Google now end without a click, and the proportion grows as Google adds more inline answers.
For business owners, zero-click search represents both a threat and an opportunity. If your content is not structured to win snippets, you lose visibility to competitors whose content is. If your content does win the snippet, your brand appears above all other results, even if the user does not visit your site.
Types of featured snippets
Google supports several featured snippet formats. Paragraph snippets answer "what is" and "how to" questions with a short text excerpt. List snippets appear for step-by-step instructions or ranked items. Table snippets display structured data in a grid format, ideal for comparisons, pricing and specifications. Video snippets surface a timestamped video segment.
AI Overviews, introduced in 2024, synthesise information from multiple sources into a conversational answer. While not technically a featured snippet, they represent the same zero-click behaviour and require similar optimisation strategies.
Structuring content for snippets
To win a paragraph snippet, write a clear, direct answer to a specific question and place it near the top of the page. The answer should be one to two sentences in its own paragraph or a <p> tag. Use the question as the heading (H2) and follow it immediately with the answer.
For list snippets, use numbered or bulleted lists introduced by a heading that implies an order or set of items. Google prefers lists with three to eight items. For example, a section titled "Five steps to optimise a product page" with a numbered list of five steps is a strong candidate for a list snippet.
FAQ schema
FAQ structured data is the most reliable way to get your content into rich results. Mark up your questions and answers using the FAQPage schema type. Google may display these as an accordion in search results, which increases visibility and click-through rates even in a zero-click environment.
Each FAQ entry must be a genuine question and answer, not a keyword-stuffed heading and a thin paragraph. Follow our schema markup guide for implementation details. Properly marked-up FAQ sections also feed into AI Overviews and conversational search results.
Table extraction
Google extracts tables from web pages and renders them as table snippets in search results. If your page includes a comparison table, a pricing table or a specification grid, Google may display it directly. Use standard HTML <table> tags with clear <th> headers. Avoid using images for tabular data.
Tables that win snippets are concise, include no more than five to seven columns and focus on a single comparison theme. A price comparison across hosting tiers or a feature comparison across software packages is a strong candidate for table extraction.
Measuring zero-click performance
Google Search Console does not report zero-click impressions directly, but you can infer snippet performance from the "Search appearance" filter. Filter for "Featured snippets" to see which queries trigger snippets from your site. Track the positions where your snippet appears and monitor click-through rates.
Third-party tools such as Semrush and Ahrefs report which keywords trigger snippets and which site holds the snippet position. Monitor your snippet win rate over time as a performance metric. Even if click-through rates decline, brand visibility in snippets has value for recognition and trust.

Frequently asked questions
A featured snippet is a direct extraction from a single page displayed in a formatted box. An AI Overview synthesises information from multiple sources into a conversational paragraph. Both reduce the need for users to click through.
Identify questions your audience asks, create dedicated sections with the question as an H2, provide a clear answer in the next paragraph, and support it with a list or table where appropriate. Use FAQ structured data.
Not always. Snippets can decrease click-through rates because the user gets the answer without visiting your site. However, they increase brand visibility and can drive traffic for longer-tail queries that the snippet does not fully answer.
Definitional content ("what is X"), step-by-step guides, comparisons and specification tables. Questions that have clear, factual answers are most likely to trigger snippets.
Yes. Google surfaces video snippets with timestamps for how-to and tutorial queries. A well-structured video with chapters and a transcript can win a video snippet.
