Keyword research that actually produces customers
How to find keywords worth targeting, why search volume is the wrong first filter, and how to map keywords to pages so they do not compete.
On this page
Good keyword research starts with intent, not volume. A term searched fifty times a month by people ready to buy is worth more than one searched five thousand times by people who will never become customers.
Start with intent, not volume
Every search sits somewhere on a spectrum. Informational searches want to understand something. Commercial searches are comparing options. Transactional searches are ready to act. You need content for all three, but you should build the transactional pages first because they pay for everything else.
Reported volume figures are also less reliable than most people assume. Analysis of large keyword datasets shows the overwhelming majority of terms get fewer than ten searches a month, and that planner tools systematically overestimate. Treat volume as a rough signal, not a fact.
Where to find real keywords
- Google Search Console: terms you already appear for but rank badly
- Autocomplete and People Also Ask on your core terms
- The exact words customers use in enquiry emails and WhatsApp
- Competitor page titles and headings
- Your own support tickets and frequently asked questions
- Paid search data, which shows which terms convert
Map one intent to one page
Cannibalisation happens when several pages chase the same query. Google picks one, usually not the one you wanted, and the others dilute your authority. Build a simple sheet: one row per target keyword, one column for the single page that owns it. If two rows point at the same page, fine. If one keyword points at two pages, merge them.
The long tail does the heavy lifting
Specific, longer queries carry less competition and far clearer intent. Someone searching for a broad head term is browsing; someone searching a five-word question with a city name in it is choosing a supplier. A library of pages answering those specific questions is how a small site outranks a big one.
Frequently asked questions
One primary keyword and a handful of close variants. If you find yourself listing six unrelated terms, that is six pages.
Write naturally. If you must have a number, roughly 0.8 to 1.5 percent is normal for well-written content, but readability beats any ratio.
