What GA4 changed
Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. The biggest change for business owners is the shift from session-based tracking to event-based tracking. In Universal Analytics, a pageview started a session and everything else happened inside that session. In GA4, everything is an event — pageviews, clicks, form submissions — and sessions are derived from events.
This matters because GA4 gives you much more flexibility in what you track, but it also demands that you define what an important event looks like. If you track everything, you will drown in data. The key is identifying the events that correlate with real business outcomes.
The 8 essential events for service businesses
Service businesses — web designers, developers, consultants, agencies — do not sell products from a cart. They sell enquiries, consultations and proposals. The events that matter are the ones that signal buying intent.
1. page_view. GA4 tracks this automatically. Use it to understand which services generate the most interest. Filter by landing page to see where new visitors enter your site.
2. scroll. A visitor who scrolls 90% of a service page is more engaged than one who bounces after 10 seconds. GA4 tracks scroll depth automatically. Use the 90% scroll as a signal that the content is working.
3. click. Track clicks on phone numbers, email addresses, and key CTAs (Get a quote, Contact us, See pricing). You need to set these up as click events — GA4 does not track clicks on specific elements by default.
4. form_start. On a contact form, tracking when a user clicks into the first field tells you the form is visible and inviting. Compare form_start to form_submit to find drop-off points in your form.
5. form_submit. The most important event for a service business. Every form submission is a lead. Tag these as conversions in GA4 and connect them to your CRM if possible.
6. phone_click. For Bahrain service businesses, many leads still come by phone. Tag clicks on click-to-call links as conversions. If you use different numbers for different campaigns, track each one separately.
7. email_click. Clicks on email addresses are weaker signals than form submissions, but they indicate interest. Track them as milestones even if you do not count them as conversions.
8. chat_start. If you have live chat or a chatbot, tracking when a conversation starts gives you a conversion point that falls between a page visit and a form submission. Chatbot conversations that end in a phone number share are strong lead signals.
How to implement GA4 event tracking
Implementation depends on your platform. If you use a CMS like WordPress, a plugin like Google Site Kit or MonsterInsights handles the GA4 tag and basic events automatically. Custom events — clicks, form starts, phone clicks — require either a tag manager or code changes.
Google Tag Manager is the recommended approach. You install the Tag Manager container once and push new events through the Tag Manager interface without touching the site code. Create a tag for each of the eight events above, set the trigger (element click, form submission, scroll depth), and publish.
For form_start tracking, use a form field focus trigger. For form_submit, use the form submission trigger. For phone_click, create a click trigger that matches your phone number link selector.
Test every event in GA4's DebugView before publishing. Open your site with debug mode enabled and trigger each event manually. Verify that the event name, parameters and value appear in DebugView.
Setting up conversions and a reporting dashboard
In GA4, mark form_submit and phone_click as conversions. Go to Admin > Events and toggle the conversion switch for each event. GA4 will then include these in the Conversions report and make them available for bid optimization if you run Google Ads.
Build a simple dashboard in the GA4 Reports section that shows: daily conversions (form_submit + phone_click), conversion rate (conversions per 1,000 sessions), top landing pages by conversions, and the form_start to form_submit drop-off rate. This is enough data to make weekly decisions without analysis paralysis.
If you need more sophisticated reporting, connect GA4 to Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio). Looker Studio lets you build custom dashboards that combine GA4 data with Google Ads, Search Console and CRM data.

Frequently asked questions
GA4 is event-based — everything is an event (pageview, click, scroll) and sessions are derived from those events. Universal Analytics was session-based, where a pageview started a session and events happened inside it. GA4 also offers cross-platform tracking and machine learning insights that UA did not.
Not strictly, but it makes implementation much easier. You can add event tracking code directly to your site, but every change requires a deployment. With GTM, you manage all tags through a web interface and changes go live immediately after publishing.
For a service business, form_submit and phone_click are the primary conversions. Email_click and chat_start can be secondary conversions or milestones. Do not mark page_view or scroll as conversions — they indicate engagement, not leads.
Use a click tracking tag in Google Tag Manager that fires when a user clicks on your phone number link. Set up a phone_click event and mark it as a conversion in GA4. If you use call tracking software, you can also import offline call data into GA4.
Yes, but it requires middleware. Tools like Zapier or Stape.io can send GA4 event data to your CRM when a conversion occurs. Alternatively, your CRM may have a native GA4 integration. This lets you track the full journey from website visit to signed client, which is the ultimate conversion.
