How to choose and protect a domain name
Choosing between .com and a country extension, avoiding names that cost you traffic, and protecting the asset your whole brand depends on.
Pick the shortest name that is easy to say out loud, register the .com if you can get it, add the local extension for the market you operate in, and lock the whole thing down so nobody can move it without you knowing.
What makes a good domain
- Short enough to say on a phone call without spelling it twice
- No hyphens, no numbers, no creative misspellings
- Easy to spell after hearing it once
- Not confusingly close to an existing brand
- Still sensible if you expand beyond your first service
Which extension
A .com remains the default assumption for most people worldwide, and if it is available for your brand, take it. A country extension signals local presence and can help in that market, so many businesses register both and redirect one.
What you should not do is build the brand on an obscure extension purely because the .com was taken, then spend years losing traffic to whoever owns it.
Protecting the asset
Your domain is the only part of your online presence that cannot be rebuilt. Register it in the company name rather than an employee's, keep the contact email on a mailbox that survives staff changes, enable registrar lock, and turn on auto-renew.
Expired domains are bought within minutes by people who resell them back at a heavy premium. A calendar reminder is cheaper.
Managing several domains
If you own variations, misspellings and country versions, keep them all with one registrar and redirect them to the primary site rather than hosting duplicate content on each. A domain manager that lets you update, transfer, purchase and manage everything in one place turns this from a chore into a two-minute job.
