How to choose a web design company
Twelve questions that separate a web design partner who will still be useful in three years from one who disappears after launch.
Pick a web design company on three things: whether you can update the site yourself afterwards, whether they understand search before they start designing, and whether they are still there when something breaks at 9pm on a Thursday.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Will I get a CMS control panel I can use without calling you?
- Who writes the content, and is keyword research included?
- Is hosting included, and where are the servers located?
- What are your support hours, and on which channels?
- Is there a warranty period, and what does it cover?
- Will the site be responsive and tested on real devices?
- Do you set up analytics and conversion tracking?
- What happens to my rankings if you rebuild an existing site?
- Do you provide schema markup and technical SEO?
- Who owns the design files and the code?
- What is the process if I want to leave?
- Can I speak to a client you delivered two years ago?
Warning signs
Be careful with anyone who quotes before understanding your business process, who cannot explain how you will edit content, or who treats SEO as a bolt-on to be discussed after launch. Search visibility is a structural decision made when the page architecture is drawn, not a plugin installed at the end.
Also be careful with unusually cheap quotes that exclude hosting, content and support. The build is the smallest part of owning a website.

Frequently asked questions
A freelancer can be excellent for a small project. For anything that needs hosting, support cover and continuity over years, a company with a team behind it removes single-person risk.
A redesign should start with an audit. Keep the pages that already rank, map old URLs to new ones with redirects, and improve structure rather than starting from zero.
