App Store Optimisation Basics — Rank Higher in App Stores

App store optimisation (ASO) is SEO for mobile app stores. Keywords, screenshots, ratings and descriptions all affect where your app ranks and how many people download it. Here is how to improve every factor.

What ASO is

App store optimisation (ASO) is the practice of improving a mobile app's visibility in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store search results. The higher your app ranks for relevant search terms, the more organic downloads you get without paying for ads.

ASO borrows heavily from SEO, but the mechanics are different. App store algorithms weigh factors like download velocity, user ratings and review sentiment more heavily than web search engines do. A beautifully optimised listing with no downloads will still rank poorly.

The core elements of ASO fall into two categories: on-metadata factors you control directly (title, keywords, screenshots, description) and off-metadata factors you influence indirectly (ratings, reviews, download volume). A complete ASO strategy works on both.

Keyword optimisation

Every app store listing has a keyword field — a hidden field on iOS and the visible description on Android. Finding the right keywords is the foundation of ASO.

Start by listing the terms your target users would type into the search bar. Include a mix of high-volume generic terms (e.g. "shopping", "fitness") and long-tail terms that signal intent (e.g. "grocery delivery Bahrain", "Calisthenics workout tracker"). Use App Store Connect and Google Play Console data to see which search terms already drive impressions to your app.

Prioritise keywords where the search volume justifies the competition. A word that fifty thousand people search for but two hundred apps target is harder to rank for than a word with five thousand searches and twelve competitors. ASO tools such as App Annie, Sensor Tower and Mobile Action provide this data.

Update your keywords every four to six weeks as trends shift and competitors change their strategy.

App title and subtitle

Your app title is the single most important ASO factor. On iOS, the title can be up to 30 characters and every character counts. Include your brand name and the single most important keyword or phrase that describes what the app does.

The subtitle (iOS) or short description (Android) adds another 30 characters of keyword real estate and appears directly below the title in search results. This text also influences ranking, so do not waste it on taglines. Use a concise, benefit-driven phrase that includes your secondary keywords.

For example, if your logistics app is called "ShipFast", a good title might be "ShipFast — Courier & Delivery" with the subtitle "Track parcels in Bahrain and the Gulf." That pattern packs three keyword themes into the most heavily weighted positions.

Screenshots and preview videos

Visual assets do not directly affect keyword rankings, but they determine whether someone who sees your listing taps the install button. Conversion rate is a major ranking signal because app stores reward apps that people actually download.

The first two screenshots are the most important. They appear in search results without the user needing to scroll. Lead with the most compelling benefit — the problem your app solves — shown in context. Use captions overlaid on the screenshot to reinforce key features and keywords.

Preview videos (iOS) automatically play in search results on eligible devices and consistently boost conversion rates. Keep videos under 30 seconds, demonstrate the core flow and show the interface clearly.

For Arabic-speaking markets, localise your screenshots. Arabic text and culturally relevant imagery improve conversion significantly over English-only assets.

Ratings and reviews

Ratings are a direct ranking signal in both app stores. Apps with 4.5 stars and above rank significantly better than apps with 3.5 stars for the same keywords. Beyond the average, the recency and volume of ratings matter — a surge of positive reviews in the past week improves your ranking more than historic ratings.

The best way to earn ratings is to ask at the right moment. Trigger the review prompt after a user has completed a positive action — finished a workout, placed an order, completed a level — not when they first open the app. Do not bribe or incentivise ratings; Apple and Google both forbid it and the penalties include app removal.

Respond to negative reviews professionally and quickly. A thoughtful response to a one-star review often prompts the user to update their rating, and it signals to prospective users that you take feedback seriously.

Localisation

Localisation goes beyond translating your description. Effective ASO localisation means translating your keywords, subtitle, screenshots and video audio into the target language using phrases that real users in that market search for.

If your app targets users across the Gulf, localise for Arabic with regionally appropriate terms. A keyword that works in Egypt may not match search behaviour in Saudi Arabia or Bahrain. The iOS App Store lets you submit per-country localisations so you can tailor keyword strategy to each market.

Localised apps consistently outperform non-localised apps in their target markets by every metric: impressions, conversion rate and rating.

Measuring ASO performance

Without measurement, ASO is guesswork. Track three tiers of metrics. Impression volume tells you whether your keywords are driving visibility. If impressions are flat, your metadata needs updating. Conversion rate tells you whether your creative assets are working. If impressions are high but conversion is low, screenshots or the description need improvement.

Keyword rankings are the most granular metric. Pick ten to twenty target keywords and track your position for each one weekly. A good ASO programme moves the average position from outside the top twenty into the top ten over two to three months.

Use App Store Connect and Google Play Console for first-party data, and supplement with an ASO tool for competitor keyword intelligence. Report monthly and iterate based on what the numbers tell you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

ASO optimises for app store search algorithms in Apple's App Store and Google Play Store, while SEO optimises for web search engines like Google. Both use keywords and metadata but app stores also weigh ratings, reviews and download velocity heavily.

Keyword ranking changes can be seen within one to two weeks of an update. Significant download volume increases from ASO typically take four to eight weeks as the app stores re-evaluate your relevance signals.

Yes, and the effect is significant. Apps with higher ratings and more frequent positive reviews rank better for the same keywords. Apple and Google both treat review volume and recency as quality signals.

If your app targets users in Arabic-speaking markets, localising your title, subtitle, description and screenshots into Arabic is essential. Localised listings convert better and rank higher in local search results.

Track three metrics: impression volume (how many people see your listing), conversion rate (percentage who install) and keyword ranking positions for your target terms. Both Apple and Google provide analytics for these.
