What AI Overviews are
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results for certain queries. They synthesise information from multiple sources, present a direct answer and cite the pages used. Launched broadly in 2024 and significantly expanded through 2025–2026, they now appear for millions of queries across commercial, informational and local search verticals.
An AI Overview differs from a featured snippet in two critical ways. First, it draws from multiple sources, not just one. Second, it is generated by a language model, not extracted from a single page. This means the optimisation strategy is different: you are competing for a citation within a synthesis, not for the single position at position zero.
For businesses in Bahrain and the Gulf, the impact is significant. A query like “best web hosting Bahrain” might trigger an AI Overview that summarises options from multiple providers. If your content is structured to be citable, you appear in the summary. If not, your competitors do.
Impact on traffic
The immediate reaction to AI Overviews is often concern about lost clicks. If the user gets their answer in the overview, do they still visit the source page? The data so far shows a mixed picture. For simple informational queries, click-through rates to source sites have declined. For complex or transactional queries, users still click through for detail, verification and purchasing decisions.
The net effect depends on your content strategy. If your pages target simple questions with one-line answers, AI Overviews may reduce traffic. If your pages provide depth that the overview cannot deliver, AI Overviews can increase visibility and establish authority that drives clicks on other queries. The key is ensuring your content appears in the overview AND offers something worth clicking for.
Our SEO services include AI Overview optimisation as a standard component of content programmes.
Content structure for AI extraction
Google AI Overviews favour content that answers the query directly in the first paragraph of a section. The pattern is identical to GEO: state the answer, then expand. Content that buries the answer midway through a page or wraps it in qualifying language is rarely cited.
Use the following checklist for every page targeting AI Overview citation. The answer to the target query must appear in the opening two sentences of the relevant section. The answer should be a single, declarative sentence that can stand alone. Supporting detail, examples and context follow after the answer. Use tables, bullet lists and bold text around key facts, all of which increase AI extraction confidence.
Avoid hedging. “Web hosting in Bahrain typically costs between BD 3.5 and BD 11.5 a month” is more likely to be cited than “Depending on the provider and the plan, web hosting in Bahrain can vary in price.”
Schema types that help
Structured data is one of the strongest signals for AI Overview inclusion. The schema types that correlate most strongly with citation are FAQPage, QAPage, HowTo, Article, Product and Organisation. Each of these explicitly labels content elements that an AI model can extract without parsing.
FAQPage schema is particularly effective because it mirrors the question-answer format of AI Overviews. Every article on this site includes FAQPage schema with 4–6 questions. The result is that our FAQ content is regularly cited in AI Overviews for queries related to web hosting, website design and digital marketing.
Our schema markup guide walks through the implementation for each type. If your site does not yet use structured data, start with Organisation and Article schema for every page, then add FAQPage for any page that answers common questions.
Topical authority
AI Overviews do not cite single pages in isolation. They assess the topical authority of the domain as a whole. A site that has published 30 articles about web hosting is far more likely to be cited for a hosting query than a site with one article, even if the single article is well written.
Building topical authority means publishing a cluster of interlinked content around a core topic. Each piece covers a different angle, and internal links connect them into a coherent knowledge base. The AI model recognises the cluster as evidence of depth. For a hosting company, the cluster might include articles on pricing, security, migration, performance and comparisons, all linking to each other and to the main hosting service page.

Monitoring performance
Google does not provide a dedicated AI Overviews report in Search Console, but you can infer inclusion through several signals. Monitor your branded search queries for changes in click-through rate and impression volume. A sharp drop in CTR with stable impressions may indicate that an AI Overview is satisfying the query without a click.
Use third-party tools that track AI Overview visibility (some SEO platforms now include this). Run manual checks on your target queries weekly and document whether your content appears. Track which pages get cited and analyse what content structure, schema types and query categories perform best. Over time, this data informs a content strategy that systematically improves your citation rate.

Frequently asked questions
For simple informational queries, traffic may decrease. For complex and transactional queries, AI Overviews can increase visibility and position you as an authority. The net effect depends on how well your content provides depth beyond the overview.
Search for your target queries in Google and look for the AI Overview block. Manual checks are the most reliable method currently. Some SEO tools offer AI Overview tracking features that are improving over time.
Featured snippets extract a single source. AI Overviews synthesise multiple sources using a language model. The optimisation strategy differs because you are competing for citation within a synthesis, not for a single position.
AI Overviews appear on both, but the format differs. Desktop users see the overview alongside organic results. Mobile users see it more prominently due to screen layout. The optimisation approach is the same for both.
Initial citations can appear within weeks of publishing structured, answer-focused content. Building the topical authority needed for consistent citation typically takes 3–6 months of sustained content publishing.
